Firstly, Tamoxifen Citrate aka Nolvadex is an antineoplastic nonsteroidal selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM). Secondly, Tamoxifen Citrate is the trans-isomer of a triphenylethylene derivative chemically.

How Tamoxifen Citrate works:

Tamoxifen competitively inhibits the binding of estradiol to estrogen receptors, therefore preventing the receptor from binding to the estrogen-response element on DNA. As a result, it shows reduction in DNA synthesis and cellular response to estrogen.

In addition, Tamoxifen up-regulates the production of transforming growth factor B (TGFb). Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) represents an evolutionarily conserved family of secreted polypeptide factors. For example, they regulate many aspects of physiological embryogenesis and adult tissue homeostasis. The TGF-β family members are also involved in pathophysiological mechanisms that underlie many diseases. Lastly, it down-regulates insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF 1), a factor that stimulates breast cancer cell growth.
