Pyrazolam was originally developed by a team led by Leo Sternbach at Hoffman-La Roche in the 1970s.

How Pyrazolam works:

Firstly, Pyrazolam contains a benzene ring fused to a diazepine ring called triazolobenzodiazepines, distinguished by the suffix “-zolam”. This is a seven membered ring with the two nitrogen constituents located at R₁ and R₄. Bromine binds to this bicyclic structure at R₇. Additionally, at R₆ the bicylic core substitutes with a 2-pyridine ring.

Further, Pyrazolam contains a 1-methylated triazole ring fused to and incorporating R₁ and R₂ of its diazepine ring.

Secondly, it  binds to the receptor site and magnifies the efficiency and effects of the neurotransmitter gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). They do this by acting on its receptors. For example, this site is the most prolific inhibitory receptor set within the brain. Consequently, its modulation results in calming effects on the nervous system.

Also, Pyrazolam has structural similarities to bromazepam but  does not appear to undergo metabolism. Instead, its excretion does not change in the urine, thus not interacting with liver enzymes. That is to say, it has a reduced liver function which may be safer.
