Melanotan 2 is a synthetic analogue of the peptide hormone α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that stimulates melanogenesis and increases sexual arousal. The molecule was first developed in the 1980s by University of Arizona researchers, who were looking to clarify the nature and role of the melanocortin receptors in physiological functions. Namely, the peptide was intended to be used as a sunless tanning agent, but was subsequently found to strongly affect sexual function and appetite. Nonetheless, Melanotan 2 serves as an excellent tool to ward off skin issues. It boosts the amount of melanin in the body that darkens the skin.  Melanin is the skin pigment produced that protects our skin from sun’s UV radiation and damage. It could be considered our body’s own natural sunscreen. Low levels of melanin mean that the skin is highly susceptible to DNA damage with excess sun exposure. This lack of melanin and its protection against UV radiation means that those individuals with fair skin have a propensity to burn and risk more DNA damage. It also means that a lot of time is invested their ability to develop a tan safely without burning. MT-2 also boosts energy, stamina, and libido. 

Melanotan 2 acts as a non-selective agonist of the melanocortin receptors MC₁, MC₃, MC₄, and MC₅.

Melanotan 2 produces melanogenesis by activation of the MC₁ receptor, whereas its clinically documented sexual effects are thought to be related to its ability to activate the MC₄ receptor (though the MC₃ is thought to also possibly be involved).
