Firstly, Finasteride is an orally active drug that was first approved by the FDA in 1992. Markedly, for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia and to improve symptoms and reduce the risk for acute urinary retention. In 1998, the FDA approved it to treat male pattern hair loss. Finasteride’s brand names Propecia and Proscar are common in the market place today.

How Finasteride works:

Finasteride is in a class of medications 5-alpha reductase inhibitors and therefore an antiandrogen. Research and clinical studies show that it can prevent the spread of receding hairlines and help to boost hair regrowth by stopping testosterone (a sex hormone) turning into another hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone responsible for male pattern baldness. DHT can also cause your prostate to grow bigger.

Possible Benefits:

• it can potentially improve the appearance of receding hairlines and overall hair thinning. Unfortunately, Finasteride does not seem to treat thinning hair at the temples and treat hair loss in women or children
• stops DHT from production and this helps shrink your prostate and reduce hair loss
• treats symptoms of BPH such as frequent and difficult urination and may reduce the chance of acute urinary retention (sudden inability to urinate)
