Firstly, Anastrozole is a synthetic nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitor (AI) similar to Letrozole and Exemstane. Aromatase inhibitors, including Anastrozole, have become endocrine drugs of choice in the treatment of postmenopausal breast cancer due to a more favorable efficacy and adverse effect profile as compared to earlier estrogen receptor modulators such as Tamoxifen.

How Anastrozole works:

Secondly, Anastrozole works by preventing the conversion of androgens to estrogens. By doing so, it decreases estrogen levels in the body. This can be beneficial, as estrogen has a habit to promote the growth of breast tissue.

As a third-generation aromatase inhibitor, it selectively binds to and reversibly inhibits aromatase, a cytochrome P-450 enzyme complex found in many tissues. This includes those of the premenopausal ovary, liver, and breast; aromatase catalyzes the aromatization of androstenedione and testosterone into estrone and estradiol, the final step in estrogen biosynthesis.
