Albuterol was first brought to market in 1968 by Allen and Hanburys of the United Kingdom, under the brand name Ventolin. Since then, it has been one of the most popular asthma drugs. For one thing, its purpose is for the relief of bronchospasm in such conditions as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In 1982, the FDA approved its use in the United States. Equally important, it’s on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential medicines. This means that it is one of the most important medicines in a basic health system.

How Albuterol works:

Firstly, Albuterol is a synthetic sympathomimetic amine that selectively stimulates beta-adrenoceptors. A racemic mixture, albuterol is short-acting and is relatively selective for beta-2 adrenoceptor sites.

For example, Beta adrenoceptor agonists stimulate the production of cyclic AMP through activation of adenylate cyclase. Cyclic AMP enhances the activity of cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase A. This causes smooth muscle relaxation and inhibition of mast cell release in the airways. Lastly, Albuterol has a greater effect on the beta-2 adrenoceptors in the bronchial tree, uterus, and vascular smooth muscles than on the beta-1 adrenoceptors in heart.
